But they were met by barricades, and the DNC barred them from entering the building. Instead, a staffer brought down a box of donuts and gave it to them. Nina Turner wasn't happy. And rightly so. The whole event was ugly and disrespectful and handled poorly top to bottom. 
The centrist anti-Bernie crowd thought this was hilarious. So the entire group of psycho trolls that was cultivated by @neeratanden and @SallyAlbright start putting donuts in their username. And it caught on with the rest like wildfire.
For two years, the thousands of fanatics in "Donut Twitter" have been some of the most cruel, malicious, and destructive people on this website. But they targeted commie trans teens and misfit Bernie fans, not bluecheck journos or professional class accounts. So nobody cared.
