The touring 'Gods in Color' #exhibition has now returned in expanded form to Frankfurt's Liebieghaus museum (Germany), with more than 100 objects including a number of new reconstructions.

Original from Delos, copy made in the 2nd c. BC of a famous original dating from 300 BC.

Alternative colour reconstructions of the so-called Peplos Kore from the Athenian Acropolis made c. 530 BC. Her clothing suggests that she is the cult image of Artemis.

I was meant to be visiting Lambaesis today where Hadrian reviewed the fighting skills of Rome's African army. He witnessed its manoeuvres and criticised/praised them in speeches to the troops. The army recorded the speeches in an inscription on the parade ground.

Lambaesis was a huge military settlement and the camp housed the Third Augustan Legion. Hadrian visited the fortress in the early summer of AD 128.

After observing the army's manoeuvres over the course of 3 days, Hadrian addressed different groups of soldiers in a speech. He praised the Ala I Pannoniorum for their javelin throwing, performed while they were wearing the cuirass. He complimented their prowess, telling them:

The so-called Colossus of Memnon, situated on the west bank of the Nile opposite Thebes, was among the main attractions in #Egypt during Graeco-Roman times. They were in fact two colossal statues set up to honour Pharaoh Amenhotep III who ruled during the 18th Dynasty. Image
The statue on the right earned itself the name Colossus of Memnon because it began to sing after its upper part toppled to the ground following an earthquake in 26 BC. At dawn a whistling sound was produced through the cracks that was interpreted as Memnon singing to his mother. Image
Memnon was a hero of the Trojan War, the Ethopian king who was slain by Achilles. He was the son of Eos/Aurora, goddess of dawn.

In April 2019, I went on a two-week archaeological tour of Iran. Our “Glory of Persia” tour took us to Iran’s 4 ancient capitals: Susa, Ecbatana, Pasargadae and Persepolis. We traced the roots of the Elamites, Achaemenids, Parthians, Sasanians and Safavids.
