If you have some extra time on your hands, hope you'll consider taking time to make your social media more accessible. Below are a few things you can start doing.

Caption your Instagram Story videos.

@AOC uses an app called @clipomatic to caption her Instagram Story videos. It's $4.99 in the App store. I just downloaded it, and it's pretty cool.

Write out image descriptions and alt text when you share images, photos, AND GIFs on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Yes, the platforms now automatically add alt text to our image posts. But it's still important to add our own.

Always caption your videos! This goes especially for platforms, brands, and organizations.

I use @KapwingApp. It's free and fairly simple to use. If you don't like the watermark it leaves and have the ability to do so, there is a paid version.

Be considerate when it comes to your emoji usage.

Avoid using unnecessary emojis so that people who use screen readers don't have to hear all of your emojis out loud. Also, avoid using emojis in the middle of words so as not to mess with screen readers.

When you're typing out a hashtag that has multiple words, use camelcase.

#WriteItLikeThis and not #LIKETHIS.

Camelcase is friendlier for people with dyslexia and cognitive disabilities and also for screen readers, since it helps separate the words.

On another hashtag note, try to make your hashtags as accessible as possible.

People often use #IStandWith to show support for important causes. In reality, millions of people cannot physically stand. Instead, consider using #ImWith, #SolidarityWith, or #ISupport, for example.
In general, try to be intentional about the language you use. There are tons of words we use every day that leave people out.

For example, millions of people around the world are not able to see, hear, or listen. I like to use "check this out" as an alternative.
If you have a podcast, prioritize transcribing your episodes.

One trick is to upload the episode as a video to YouTube, which then transcribes the audio. brassybroad.com/create-transcr…
