1/n It took me a couple of days, but I've finally finished constructing a 73-series singular index of immigration liberalism using Stimson's dyad ratios algorithm (which circumvents missing data issues). Here is how far left the public as a whole has moved on immigration.

3/n As I've always maintained, the immigration attitudes of white conservatives have been relatively stable for decades. Those of white libs otoh...
4/n If you're wondering why the first dimension accounts for far greater white liberal than conservative variance it's because the former are much less likely to distinguish between illegal and legal immigrants (as I've noted previously, e.g. )
5/n Specifically, for white conservatives, ~36% of the variance is accounted for by dimension 1 and another 24% is accounted for by dimension 2. For white libs, ~80% is explained by dimension 1, and just 11% by dimension 2.
6/n Similar results by party
7/n And, once again, NO: as clearly shown, Trump did NOT originate the trend of immigration wokeness. Please get that out of your heads (if it's still there).
8/n At some point in the last few years, white libs began to out-woke even non-white libs on immigration. As of 2019, there's about a 12 point separation
9/n I'll say it again: white Republicans have not become more 'extreme' on immigration. Those in the media who assert as much are either lying (to absolve themselves of responsibility for the 2016 election) or haven't looked at the data .
