Politicians like Salvini want to leave the euro. Always have, always will. They are just waiting for the right moment - and some are providing him and others with that opportunity on a silver platter
The President of Italy has twice in recent days criticised the EU - most recently tonight, specifically singling out the European Council and member states. That is extraordinary. Draghi’s editorial in the FT is also extraordinary. Both a reflection of the urgency to act now
Many EU leaders in recent weeks have spoken of the ‘greatest challenge since the war’ - but the solutions and tools that many are proposing are same old same old and don’t quite live up to enormity of that challenge.
I should add: there have been impressive national responses & acts of solidarity from some member states. EU institutions & ECB do what they can. It is collective member state action that is falling short - and that is as much a political challenge as a question of economics
