I get asked about this so often, Im going to make a thread to share going fwd. There is a general disagreement w ppl like me and @aliamjadrizvi believing it is possible and ppl like @ArminNavabi and @SarahTheHaider who believe it is not
1
We won't know who wins this debate as it wont be settled in our lifetimes, but I see enough evidence to give me hope. I think Muslims can reach the point that most Christians and Jews are at-that is having a tenuous connection to their religion without practicing it literally
2
What gives me this impression is that I've lived in Muslim majority countries and attended and taught in Islamic schools and in general-ppl want to be free. If Muslims are given the option between Sharia and freedom, they will overwhelmingly choose freedom.
3
The problem is: they dont have that choice today. So what we see happening today is the result of indoctrination from the media, from the education system, and from the govt. If there can be separation of Mosque and state-things would be different
4
The evidence of that is-look at Muslims in the West. They are by far more open-minded than Muslims in Muslim majority countries-because they have the freedom to be more open-minded. The indoctrination is at home, but not nearly as all encompassing as under a Sharia govt
5
And even under Sharia! Look how the ppl of Saudi Arabia and Iran are pushing for progress despite the fact that they pay for for it by being imprisoned or killed. How can that not give you hope? Their bravery is so inspiring.
6
Of course, there is the problem that the doctrines are still there, so ppl could gravitate toward them. Yes, they could. But why would they want to? This is why most Jews are not Hasidic and most Christians are not fundamentalists-it's a difficult and terrible existence.
7
So, in closing,I support Muslims and ppl of any/no faiths who support progress and enlightenment values over religion. Ive made the parallel to gun reform-just because it is highly unlikely-doesnt mean we should stop trying. You may see me as a hopeless optimist, but so be it.

When I tell you it’s a cult. When I tell you it’s like the mafia. This is what I mean. A mother threatens to kill her daughter over a piece of cloth, and I am the shameful one for mentioning it. They want us to keep silent and hide the tyranny even as our throats are being split.
I spoke to a woman in Jordan whose father threw her out a window and her family convinced her to tell the doctors she fell so that her father wouldn’t be in trouble.
And she did.
This is how we are taught to deny our agency. This is how we are taught that we are subordinate things. This is how we are seen and this is how we, in turn, see ourselves. We minimize and diminish ourselves to uphold the family honor and hide the dirty laundry at all costs.
86% percent of wives are beaten in Egypt. Guess how many women’s shelters there are? In a country of over 102 million?
Zero. Zero shelters for women.
“All Abrahamic religions are sexist” is the all lives matter of atheists
Yes. We’re aware.
However we’re currently talking about one religion. One that has domestic violence codified into their edicts. Can we focus on a topic where you’re not centered for just a minute?
It’s funny how I escaped from the terrorist I was forced to marry, with only my baby daughter and a high school education, then my mother threatened to kill me, escaped her too, and survived to tell the tale-
Yet ppl think lobbing the word ‘Islamophobia’ will stop me
Every single time I read about a man who beheaded his wife, a father who beheaded his daughter, a brother who killed his sister, chopped her up and buried her in the backyard-I see my face in hers. I know I could have been her. I know I survived for a reason. I will never stop.
@Saharathefree1 grew up in a refugee camp, barely knew her parents, endured FGM, escaped in the middle of the night, worked in whatever jobs she could get her hands on, came to the US illiterate, and now she’s an educator.
“The bill that was proudly supported by the Democratic party failed to define Islamophobia.”
This is the crux of the issue. This should concern you.
Oxford dictionary defines Islamophobia as:dislike of or prejudice against Islam or Muslims, especially as a political force.

This is what happens in countries that criminalize criticism of a religion.
Note: they wanted the death penalty-as per Sharia- but because he confessed settled for 15 years…..over posts made on Twitter from an anonymous account.
It’s sad ppl are so accustomed to binary thinking these days. I miss when ppl simply had other opinions and perspectives. When ppl were free to open their mind without immediate demonization of the ‘other side’. This world is so black and white. No nuance. No color. No flavor.
Fwiw, I was both indoctrinated and beaten while attending public school, while being homeschooled, and while in an Islamic private school. The school is irrelevant. Shitty parents exist-and that is a different discussion.
I’m sharing my perspective, my experience-you are under no obligation to agree. Obviously there are many reasons why public school is failing and many reasons why ppl cannot/ choose not to homeschool. No need to assume ppl who make different choices do so for nefarious reasons.
I’ve been in Education for 20 yrs. I’ve taught every level from kindergarten to post-grad. Homeschool your kids if you can. Your district most likely offers a distance education option-enroll your child. Then enroll them in a team sport. You’ll thank me later xx
It has come to my attn, because of some comments, ppl are unclear that homeschooling does not mean you have to be a scholar in all subjects. The distance education program offered through your ministry will have trained teachers teaching your child all subjects. You facilitate -
-the learning in the same way you’d support your child in their piano lessons that they take at home or the community sports team that they play for. You’re not expected to be a pianist or an athlete either. The difference is: you’re much more involved in what they’re learning.
