Happy to, Wayne. It’s a very long story but the Reader’s Digest version: While prosecuting a murder case, I learned that the defendant had procured the services of a hitman to kill the witnesses who would be testifying against him. The hitman followed me
in and around the courthouse during the trial. Funny, but I instantly realized I was being followed (he wasn’t the world’s most accomplished hitman). I never thought the hitman intended to to kill me. I think he followed me in an attempt to find/kill the witnesses.
As a result of belong followed I became a witness in the matter. Therefore, I was conflicted out of the case, as was my entire office (DC US Attorney’s Office). The DOJ assigned a prosecutor from the Eastern District of Virginia US Attorney’s Office to prosecute the hitman case.
I was the first witness called to testify in that prosecution. That is an example of when my work as a homicide prosecutor got a little more . . . exciting . . . then was ideal.
