This just goes to show why the amendment in the mid 70s to include "Fundamental Duties" was terrible!

Terms like "scientific temper", "humanism" are loaded

The intent was not to promote science, but rather to take potshots at essentially religious character of Indian life
And even if one were to take a charitable view, why should the development of "scientific temper" be a fundamental duty? Why?

Some people prefer the scientific method
Some rely on intuitive hunches
Some rely on heuristic approaches to problem solving
Others rely on faith
Why would you not mention these several other aspects of the human intellectual condition, and harp on scientific temper alone?

The intent is disingenuous

A stealthy attempt to force a certain political view on to the Constitution

To "sacralize" and eternalize a certain POV
Deep down there was a contempt for religion. And for the dirty "communal forces" that mix religion and public life (inevitable in a country like ours)

But you can't attack them directly in the Constitution

So you stealthily slip in buzzwords like "scientific temper"
