"I’ve been frustrated with this language of social distancing because it seems to imply that we’re only going get through this if we turn our backs on one another — and especially turn our backs on the people who are most vulnerable," says @ErikKlinenberg: vox.com/podcasts/2020/…
The people being asked to sacrifice most right now are younger, and lower-income. Policy in this country didn't extend a lot of solidarity to them before this crisis. Now an enormous amount is being asked of them, to protect those most vulnerable to COVID-19.
Will those same folks asking for sacrifice now stand in solidarity with them on health reform, on climate change, on student debt? This is going to be a long-haul, and for it to work, solidarity can't only go one way.
"When you need people to make compromises and deep sacrifices in their personal life for the good of the collective, you need some sense of a collective to draw on," says Klinenberg.

He explains how build that sense of collective, now and going forward: vox.com/podcasts/2020/…
