In our conversation, Gates draws an analogy to World War II that actually does give me some hope.

When he said he believed coronavirus might lead us to a deeper form of global cooperation, I pushed him on rising xenophobia and international tensions. His reply:
"In the case of World War II, we know that Germany and Japan had something to do with causing the war. In that case, it wasn’t just some bat somewhere that some guy ate."
"You could have said then that it would permanently change attitudes toward people from Japan or Germany — and during the course of the war, we did horrible things we regret because of that. But that’s gone."
"We took a much worse situation and crafted it into the institutions and the economic growth and innovation that we’ve had between World War II and now. I hope that this looks like that."
