The only person to get the lie:
I met Jay Z when he came to Princeton for a seminar Cornel West and @esglaude used to run here. Ran into them at the dinner after.
Jimmy Carter was a keynote at a conference in Emory.
Toni Morrison was faculty here, and I met her several times. She was incredibly nice but I always felt like I was 12 years old.
I was the faculty guide for Kareem when he got an honorary degree here. Had dinner with him at a banquet the night before, with big plans to talk civil rights and just got completely tongue tied.
Shelby Foote was a red herring for historians who knew I’d never brag about that — came to my English class at UNC.
Met Jesse Jackson after a talk at the Wilson School here.
We had Salman Rushdie down to give a talk when @Prakashzone ran the Davis Center and I was the assistant. He was wickedly funny.
And I met Clarence Thomas at a dinner for the Supreme Court Historical Society. (I won an essay prize and that was part of the award.) Meeting him was only the fifth most surreal part of the event.
