The constant attempts to frame the debate over hydroxychloroquine as a political fight are dangerous and harmful. Trump AND the press should be deferring to medical professionals on this question.
There are still a lot of questions about its effectiveness, but doctors are using it. A lot of focus has been on how we don't want people demanding it from their doctors bc Trump suggested it, but we also don't want people refusing it bc press framed it as harmful and unproven.
At the end of the day, let trials move forward, gather more evidence, prepare supply if needed, and let doctors make the call.

This is infuriatingly stupid and dishonest.

The answer is because we don't, and media outlets that suggest otherwise cannot be trusted to cover this topic.

Several large countries are clearly lying and undercounting.
Tapper throwing in a side comment about how there are some questions about the numbers doesn't change that this is clearly wrong and actively misinforms the audience.

Western Europe is ~ same size and they have a much higher % of deaths. Several other countries are just lying.
I'm serious. This was bad a few weeks ago, but journalists and outlets still doing this are intentionally lying to their audiences at this point and should lose all credibility covering this topic.

A lot of people focused solely on the models, but we can look at actual data by now. We've gone from 1K to 16K deaths in 2 weeks. That's the type of exponential growth that would have continued without drastic action and behavior changes.
People downplaying this threat are intentionally misleading their audiences into thinking we could have just done nothing and had similar results. It isn't true.

There is a lot of economic harm that comes with our mitigation efforts, but indisputable we saved many lives.
Further, their proposed strategy was unlikely to have less economic impact because if you had millions being infected over a short time and massive deaths, you'd have the same shutdown later in the cycle.

We are facing an unprecedented threat. We can win, but not by ignoring it.

This is incredibly ignorant.

These viruses attack your system, which often leads to complications and death from things like heart attacks. That doesn't mean that the virus was not responsible for the death.
It's like saying if someone gets shot and dies from blood loss then we shouldn't count it as due to being shot.

What is the alternative method for identifying COVID-19 deaths? You just don't count any deaths that aren't specifically from the virus itself?
