According to this from @NeilDotObrien coronavirus "has made “sinoscepticism” mainstream in British politics". Though plenty of anti-China articles around not sure I agree yet - but what does it say about the UK if true...? conservativehome.com/platform/2020/…
The UK is about the put up substantial trade barriers to the third largest economic bloc (the EU). Now it is suggested we become more sceptical of the second largest (China) not just due to coronavirus but also some rather Trumpian thoughts on unfair trade.
There is a strong but not perfect overlap between public anti-China politicians and those advocating a US trade deal. For which we know all about many issues, e.g. food and America First to name two. The UK doesn't get much from a US trade deal.
But there are a couple of bigger questions here. First we see particularly in the US a fairly crude linkage of China and the Soviet Union. Which doesn't work because China is a far greater global economic player than the Soviet Union ever was.
For the UK, what is our foreign policy, and are we in some way claiming equivalence with the great powers? Because given our size you'd think we need to deal with all the major economic powers rather than debating whether we can cut off China or the EU.
My thoughts on UK trade policy and coronavirus below. But we're still short of realistic visions for the UK's future in the world post-Brexit. And while that's the case we probably don't want to be writing off major powers. uktradeforum.net/2020/03/30/cor…
