Cuomo gets a lot more coverage because the national media is based in New York and his brother is on CNN, but CA has contained coronavirus much better than NY, and Gavin Newsom (and London Breed and Eric Garcetti!) have, so far, done a lot of good.
That's not to say there aren't problems in CA, inadequate testing chief among them. But there's a lot to learn from how rapidly the Bay Area, then the state, went into lockdown — decisions that saved a lot of lives.
Numbers on COVID-19 should be taken with salt, for reasons others have noted, but both death records (which are somewhat more reliable than cases) and hospital utilization suggest CA's measures have helped flatten the curve, so far. vox.com/2020/3/26/2119…
It's way, way too early in all this for anyone to roll out mission accomplished banners. But also worth giving credit where it's due.
