A really interesting presentation at January's #IAVEvent was the Leonardo DRS Mission Command Expeditionary Command Post (MC ECP) concept. A case of new automotive power generation tech enabling a rethink of TTP and structures
US Army's ABCT/SBCT Bde/Bn CPs are large static formations, as is the case for most armies. Big tents, many trucks and trailers, they take hours to set up/tear down and are a single point of failure risk and a high value target for enemy planning
Russia meanwhile has exceptional EW and other asset locating capabilities including RB-301B Borisoglebsk-2 and Leer 3, and impressive demonstrated ability to very rapidly direct fires onto a position once identified
Ukraine has shown this vividly, we cant accept contemporary CP being such vulnerable and static formations. In Donbass less than 90s from detection to rounds landing on the position. UAVs like Orlan-10 particularly prevelant in target location
The MC ECP concept is a compelling vision. Compact the CP down to just 2-4 medium vehicles - 1 comms and 1 to 3 command vehicles. The notional example shown used Strykers, but US Army has done limited trials with MaxxPro and HMMWV, and this could as easily be any tactical truck
Comms vehicle is the Mobile Integrated Command Post Support Vehicle (MiCP SV) housing all CP servers, communications and network terminals. As configured, they can operate fully without additiopnal kit, even on the move. More mobile = more survivable
C2 vehs are Mission Command Battle Staff Support Vehicles (MCBS SV). Fairly standard C2 fare using the MiCP SV for comms relay, with more vehciles added to accomodate larger formations. Can be configured with or without tented ops centres
Two enablers: 1st is DRS TITAN On-Board Vehicle Power (OBVP). Retrofitted to existing transmission to generate significant power (30 to 125 kW) directly from driveshaft without loss of automotive power or increase in drivetrain length or transmission volume
Eliminates needs for towed generators, with 1 OBVP equipped vehicle replacing ~13 towed quiet generators in a typical Bn CP. Impact on maintenance, fuel, staffing significant there alone
2nd is a robust and force-wide Scoprion SICS-esque BMS/C4ISR suite. More intelligent and connected data sharing empowered with autonomy means less people and more actionable info to fewer that actually need it and less churning info in congested CPs
These systems are inherently bespoke to each user, but would suggest without a genuine modern BMS the value of the OBVP/MC ECP concepts are not being fully leveraged as C2 cannot be as heavily distributed through the network to reduce individual CP size
Result is a smaller CP that is radically more mobile. If organisation can move to purely vehicle mounted C2, the CP can be moving regularly and easily. If a risk is detected the only action required is to close the doors and drive off
Note Boxer as illustrative example of other platforms that could be used for integrated 1 or 2 vehicle CP. This model speaks to STRIKE concept, allowing dispersed and highly mobile C2 within common platforms that are as a result harder to locate, identify and target
Below Bn level there is the oppoortunity to consolidate MiCP SV and MCBS SV CP into a single vehicle, with heavy uitilisation of the broader C2/C4 network empowering these small dispersed command nodes to also take workload off of the larger CPs
Broader utility of OBVP type technologies is obvious. Power remains a big issue and having large exportable power without volume change to components is very valuable, in many cases reducing number of vehicles in a formation. A good example is the Patriot system
Patriot has 1 EPP III truck per battery powering the AN/MPQ-65 radar & ECS. EPP is 2x 150kW generators on a HEMTT. Instead the ECS truck & AN/MPQ-65 tractor could have OBVP for power, reducing total vehicle count & removing need to co-locate them, increasing surviviability. /end
