I postponed watching #AyyappanumKoshiyum because I thought it's just a clash of egos between two men. It is that--kind of gets a bit repetitive by the end because of this, but it is also so many other things. Most of them good. SPOILERS.
I loved its moral relativism. How it's important to consider someone's place in the society, to better contextualize the crime they've committed. A guy steals gunpowder, but is released because there is a reason behind it. That's not how law works, but art can be utopian too.
Koshi's character is so used to privilege that he doesn't even notice it anymore. Him losing a Christmas isn't the same as a man losing his job. It's okay if he goes to Ayyappan's house and try to scare his wife, but if Ayyappan does it, all bets are off the table.
This privilege comes across even clearly through the characters of these men's wives. Koshi's wife knows that him getting arrested isn't a big deal, hence her behavior when she visits him in jail. Things escalate and she is in shambles. Ayyappan's wife can't afford to shiver/cry.
The entire scene between Koshi and Kannamma deals with this. Kannamma trying to make Koshi see his privilege and Koshi staring at her blankly. Kumaran's smirk at the end tying it into a perfect bow. ImageImageImageImage
Even the Jessie's character comes with her own set of issues and stakes. She starts crying loudly, and even before I can compare her reaction to Ayyappan's and say 'sexist much', comes this exchange. She is more distraught because this means more to her than it does to Ayyappan. ImageImageImage
I loved how police are portrayed in the film. Even though all of them on-screen are good cops, we don't feel like the film is trying to whitewash reality. The uniform in this film is an armor for those who otherwise hold little to no power in a society like ours.
The only way to contain someone like Ayyappan, the only way to stop him from noticing the injustice around him is to put the law in his hand, and ask him to uphold it. Biju Menon is perfect as this man. The way he switches between kind and anger is marvelous to watch.
The ending is a bit odd, I just wanted it to end at the market where they keep fighting and the crowd thins out as they lose interest after a point, as I did, but the film does something else. A great watch, even if a bit stretched out and indulgent.
