In my previous life reporting on Syria, I would often talk to Dr @sahloul when he was in Aleppo or Idlib about hospitals struggling under the weight of a crisis. Feels surreal to be having similar conversations about his work in the US. Stranger for him to be living it, I bet.
Chicago is lucky to have him. He's worked with hospitals to surge capacity under the bombs in Idlib. He's helped Syrian doctors deal with the psychological toll of the war. He's been a staunch advocate for protection of doctors. All of this experience is being put to use in US

This same crowd of conspiracy theorists called anyone who reported the truth about chemical weapons attacks in Syria "regime-change media", they were lining up to do the same with the downing of the Ukrainian jet. These people are ghouls, and frauds.
They are not interested in the complicated and messy truth. It's about them. They are the central character in their own warped anti-imperialist fantasies.
Editor's note: There is a difference between being sceptical of US government claims, and doing battle with verifiable open-source evidence. It wasn't US officials that brought this story to light. Briefings from US officials were floundering and contradictory, in fact.

Isis caliphate 'defeated': Victory declared as Islamic State loses last of its territory

"Syrian Democratic Forces declare total elimination of so-called caliphate and 100 percent territorial defeat of ISIS," said Mustafa Bali, spokesman of the US-backed group. "On this unique day, we commemorate thousands of martyrs whose efforts made the victory possible."
Isis is likely to remain a potent force in both Iraq and Syria for some time, but the collapse of the physical caliphate state marks a significant ideological and military defeat for the world’s most powerful jihadist group.

Just back from Deir ez-Zor, where thousands are fleeing the last remnants of the Isis caliphate. Over two days, we saw nearly 2,000 people leaving. They were in an awful condition, many had not eaten for days.
We saw dozens of trucks filled with people. Babies were crying constantly, kids were eating flour from the bag. We met women from Iraq, Kazakhstan and Dagestan, as well as many Syrians.
Mostly women and children, but a few dozen men among them. They were separated and the men were questioned and fingerprinted.
