Isis is likely to remain a potent force in both Iraq and Syria for some time, but the collapse of the physical caliphate state marks a significant ideological and military defeat for the world’s most powerful jihadist group.

One Kurdish commander recently told @TheIndependent his unit is already switching to counter-terrorism. That is a concern for tomorrow. Today, hundreds of thousands of people whose lives were touched by the violence and bigotry of the Isis caliphate will celebrate its demise.
