The COVID-19 Coronavirus Disease May Be Twice As Contagious As We Thought

Bad news if true, but explains a lot.

“The new study, published in the Emerging Infectious Diseases journal, shifts the R0 for COVID-19 from about 2.2 to about 5.7.” forbes.com/sites/tarahael…
“With the lower number, only 55% of a population needs to be immune from COVID-19 to stop its spread through herd immunity. Herd immunity refers to enough of a population being immune to a disease that the disease cannot travel through it. “

Don’t read too much into this study. As with all models they are likely to need refinement as more data comes to lightweight especially about levels of asymptomatic and barely symptomatic cases.

But another potential fly in the ointment for exit strategies from lockdown

But
The estimation of 20% asymptomatic prior to suppression seems reasonably modest given the Chinese leaked report suggestion a third of all cases, and Japanese estimate of 30.8%.
