Advice please. I'm looking for a good, up to date degree-level textbook on earthworms. Thanks.
Many thanks for the recs. I'm now reading Biology of Earthworms, a Springer-Verlag publication. Retailing at £140, it's a reminder of what a massive rip-off scientific publication is.
It appears completely unedited: crammed with grammatical and syntactical errors /Thread
Rather than providing a systemic overview, it's a more or less random download of disconnected research, tipped into the book as if by wheelbarrow. Much of it interesting, but with massive gaps. No system or structure at all.
Given that the authors are unlikely to have been paid, the only thing that can account for the £ is predatory pricing.
I keep finding this with sci textbooks. Random content, no discernable editing, printed on rubbish paper. Crap covers that immediately curl up. £100 please
To those people saying: "but the sales are likely to be small!"
You can produce a self-published book now for a few pounds a copy, that only 5 people are going to see. Sorry, that excuse no longer washes.
The academic publishers still use a predatory pricing model pioneered by Robert Maxwell. They erect paywalls in front of scientific knowledge that bear no relation to cost. Yes, things are at last starting to change. But they still inhibit the public understanding of science.
