Horatio Stafford was a successful Chicago lawyer with a thriving practice but the center of life was his family - Anna (wife), and 5 children (4 girls and a boy).

He was also a devoted Christian.

Unfortunately, his only son died in 1870 and the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 burned down his law office and business.

He started over soon afterward and gradually rebuilt his thriving law business until the 1873 recession wiped out his business again.

In a bid to get away from it all, he booked a trip to Europe with his wife and four daughters. Unfortunately, a business deal made it impossible for him to travel so his wife and kids left alone.

On the way to Europe, the ship sank and his four daughters died in the shipwreck.

How do you console a man who just lost his business and his family? He was obviously inconsolable.

So he took another trip to meet his wife who survived the wreck in Europe.

On his way to Europe, Horation wrote perhaps the most iconic Christian song ever.
