Listen. This isn’t pleasant.

There’s a real possibility Trump and his corporate friends will reopen this country without necessary precautions or due diligence and thousands upon thousands will die while the media doesn’t cover it.

It is...horrific but completely feasible.
America has a terrible history of letting these crimes go unobserved and unaddressed. I don’t want this to be true, but recent history suggests it’s inevitable.

America’s inability to focus or continue necessary vigil is a total nightmare and it feels like it’s coming.
It’s what happened with the Iraq War. With Katrina. With Puerto Rico. With the opioid epidemic. It happens and it just gets buried under our incessant need for distraction and appetitive for whatever comes next.

It could cost so, so, so many lives.

I hate to tell you, but as somebody from rural America, there are going to be so many uncounted deaths during this pandemic.

Poor Americans are taught not to get medical care, are riddled with preexisting conditions, and local journalism has been absolutely destroyed.
The pandemic is seeping into rural America right now and it's going to devastate communities, most of them through service jobs and retirement homes, and the media isn't going to notice or cover any of it as the narrative turns toward this thing being over.
These communities are just now being touched by the pandemic and many of them have been told by Fox News and the president that it's a political hoax.

The consequences are going to be horrific, and the media is simply not going to notice or tell their stories.

Let's be clear, this is Barack Obama telling people the Republican Party is an anti-democratic body obsessed with power and backed by a corrosive propaganda network.

People need to stop dancing around it. Call this the fascistic movement it is and level with people.
The truth is that we're in the middle of a horror show. The Republican Party and Trumpism have nothing to do with governing. It's a front for an organ that only redistributes wealth to the obscenely wealthy.

Call it what it is. Stop being afraid and get honest.
Democratic candidates need to stop dancing around Republicans and Trump and acting like any of this is normal or politics as usual.

Americans need to understand this is a political and societal crisis and it begins with leaders being honest about the threat.

Like everything else with this fraud of a presidency, the Committee to Reopen America is just an illusion, a lie that doesn't convince anyone but is only told because people expect a lie to be told.

Authoritarian regimes blend the illusion of competency and outright fraud. Releasing a Committee to Reopen America that is obviously unequipped and devoid of experts provides an illusion with a message to everyone that reality doesn't matter.

It's meant to break our will.
It's organized crime operating behind the veneer of legitimacy. Everyone knows the crime is being committed. Everyone sees it. And as they see it and as nothing is done it just communicates that the law doesn't matter.

This is how authoritarians work. We're knee-deep in it.
