Respectfully I disagree with the statement that most SA does not have a stake in the economy. 16,4 million adults had jobs, 17,5 million people get grants, well over half of SA households own their own home, 1 million people receive private pensions. 10+ mil get an education 1
25,2 mil adults have credit (loans) 117 million retirement saving accounts (11-12 mil people from about 9-10 mil households at 3,4 people per household that is over half the population -even millions out of work have retirement savings). close to 100% of adults have cellphones! 2
80%+ have electricity many of whom get help with payments from government grants. Very child get vaccines in SA. Taxes pay for that. So ALL South Africans have a stake in the economy! please respect the data not slogans 3

The more business we allow now the fewer job losses will be. Not saying all business but saying those that can be done safely. Creating a job is far harder than losing 1 sustainable one. The Bazooka approach that SA is using will lead to far more deaths than the virus. Watch!
For example, the grocery store can sell liquor, cigarettes, garden, hardware etc. Takeaways are no different to grocery deliveries. Clothing stores should also open as people need clothes etc.. If DSTV, MTN, ISP can deliver why not Takealot, Edgars or Pet store down the road? 2
Why is underwear not an essential service for example or masks at a hardware store? Why kill the economy as much as possible and then blame as a virus when clearly the Bazooka method is very much at fault too? We should rather find ways to keep the economy going or we will starve

Today is probably going to be a nightmare on the markets. There will be blood on the streets for sure. But the worst thing to do today is panic & sell everything. the next couple of weeks and months will see volatile times. You will get time to adjust your pension, stocks etc 1
To panic & make short-term decisions with your long-term savings is not something to do. Either your fund manager has already made these decisions or for you. If not fire them on another day and wait for the blood to dry. 2
The fund managers that have done badly need to punished by clients moving money away. I suggest that the worst funds over say 3, 5 & 10 years should be published in every news site. (1 year too short). Ask your financial advisor for the worst 120 funds (that's not even 10%) 3

3rd decoupling for SA from the emerging markets was the rand. It took place earlier in 2012 onwards due to commodity price declines but never recovered and took another step down from there during 2014 & 15. Again this costs SA as petrol would have been R3 less, maize lower etc.
Inflation and interest rates would have been far lower and the SA economy would have felt the positive effects of this. Even electricity prices would have been lower as coal and other costs should have been contained better.
Rand not falling out of bed would have helped everyone from farmers to consumers. The cost of government failure here shows how ordinary South Africans pay for mistakes. We pay for this in higher prices, more unemployment, poverty and inequality.
