Prof @JeremyFarrar, confirming to @AndrewMarr9 what has been obvious from the data for a while: UK is likely to have one of the worst “if not the worst” death toll in Europe.

Questions: With the resources we have and the time we had- why? What could have changed it?
There are some structural factors at work, of course- London

But other countries have structural factors which work against them we don’t have (Italy’s older population for example) if our death rate rather than toll continues to climb sharply question becomes even more acute.
For the sake of the families and our future governance, these questions should be and continue to be the cardinal questions of our politics.

What could have been done differently in this crisis and why wasn’t it?
We may come to conclude that the UK (and more so US) was the perfect storm

Set of contingent decisions made early on (or not made) which made things worse

Coupled with policy structural factors, poor state of public health, poor state of social care (in US ditto healthcare)
No politician is indifferent to the deaths. Nor are any of the decisions easy and we should all remember that all the time. It’s a nightmare. But none of those things makes any of the questions any less important.
