I find it strange that there is a major lack in effort from companies to retrain their programmers while there's still a technical "talent" gap.
Given that, there's at least two gaps in the higher education system. I'm going to riff for a bit, and we'll see where this goes
1/
First there is a gap in retraining people that want to move. Setting aside the enthusiastic-from-novelty crowd, there are many people in industry putting in off-hours to attain high skills. Yet with everything but a PhD and plurality of publication, it's ✌🏽 to you
2/
Second, we have a ton of PhD's that have weirdly can't find a place in industry, even though they are measurably overqualified. The stigma of the 1900's isn't a thing anymore: people that want to keep a steady paycheck don't quit jobs JUST because they are overqualified.

More on the PhD's.
These Researchers-to-be are WAY underpaid (low-$30k for 60+ hour weeks) in the USA. They do some of the most valuable, intensive thought labor and get peanuts as thanks.
That's a gross lack of investment in individuals, and yet...
4/
The cost of university is absurd. Those individuals I mentioned earlier - that put in time at home, but are rejected for lack of doctorate - often just can't shell out another $40k for your top Master's program. Not a conspiracy, but the price seems more to keep people out...

5/
Slightly conspiratorial (but 🤷🏽‍♂️) I think that non-regional accreditation should no longer be a thing. It's just another con. You can count on one hand the number of regionally accredited universities in the USA that accept non-regional bachelor's degrees

6/
If the logistics of maintaining the high cost of schooling is what prohibits a mono-accreditation system in this country, let's have that conversation.
But for people like me, that want more education, it's an invisible fine print on the first $100k of debt we signed on

7/
Don't get me wrong. I've been blessed and it's been amazing. I have several opportunities to do research work with brilliant people. But I, and many like me, are struggling to move forward because we missed the sign that read: "Exit Early => more treacherous return"

8/
Furthermore, I know the path I need to walk to learn most of what I want to learn. It just seems that, in the spirit of whatever possessed the USA before COVID-19, we're willing to throw young intellectual contributors off by the wayside.
"There's more where that came from."
