Nearly 2,500 nursing homes in 36 states are battling coronavirus cases, according to data gathered by @NBCNews. nbcnews.to/2y9Y82A (1/7) #NBCNewsThreads
This number is a 522% increase compared to the last federal estimate on March 30, which declared more than 400 nursing homes had at least one case of the virus. The federal tally was based on “informal outreach” to state health departments. (2/7)
Nursing home residents are among those most likely to die from COVID-19, given their age and underlying health conditions. But the U.S. government does not keep a formal tally of the amount of coronavirus deaths in nursing homes or the number of facilities with infections. (3/7)
Of the 36 states that released data to @NBCNews, New York tops the list with 452 nursing homes with COVID-19 cases. Illinois places second with 213 nursing homes battling coronavirus cases. nbcnews.com/news/us-news/m… (4/7)
The full scale of the virus’ impact is even greater than this tally, as key states including Florida did not provide data, and nursing homes across the U.S. are still struggling for access to testing. (5/7)
.@NBCNews tallied 2,246 coronavirus deaths associated with nursing homes, based on responses from 24 states.
Nearly 60% of the deaths occurred in New York, where more than 1,300 residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities have died. (6/7)
Washington state, which had the country’s first nursing home outbreak, reported 221 deaths in long-term care facilities.

The number of deaths in nursing homes is an undercount. About half of all states said they could not provide data, or declined to do so. (7/7)
