Tablighi Jamaat was a problem because it was a gathering of 22K people

Letting that happen was the govt's big blunder

Rsponse to that has been disproportionate
E.g. Not letting a man visit his aged mother or spouse staying in a neighboring town
How is this a fair response?
Gatherings of 5, 10 or even 50 people is EXTREMELY low risk...relative to what Tablighi Jamaat represented

Risk increases exponentially as the size of your gathering increases
Even if you let airports function at 50% capacity, as long as all passengers maintain social distancing, wear masks etc, the risk is not all that high

Because people don't fraternize in an airport. Unlike say in Tablighi Jamaat
You gotta understand risk better

If this govt did, they wouldn't have let TJ happen when it did.
You blunder with 1-2 TJ like events...

Then you respond with sledge-hammer like religious austerity...

For much of human history, we lived in the age of Empires, where citizenship was not tied to ethnicity

St Augustine was a Roman, yet a North African

21st cen is actually the age of "ethno-nationalisms" and nation-states. An age that started post Westphalia
So when people talk up 21st century as some golden age of "cosmopolitanism" and weakened sense of ethnic identity, they have no clue

The Roman Empire was a lot more cosmopolitan than Europe today
Back in 50 CE, you could be a gentile in Rome or in Jerusalem, and yet feel a strong sense of belonging to a common classical civilization

It didn't matter what your ethnicity was.

Ironically Malcolm Marshall made his debut in 1978-79 against India when a Packer-weakened West Indies team toured India!

Debut was in Bangalore. His fellow bowlers were Sylvester Clarke, Norbert Philip, and Vanburn Holder

He might not have debuted that early but for Packer!
His record is something out of the ordinary.

But it must be said he played in an era of somewhat weak batsmanship

Australian cricket was extremely weak, and so was English cricket in his era.

It's hard to recall even 3-4 genuinely great batsmen from the late 80s
Outside of the West Indies team, if I have to recall 3-4 truly great batsmen I might say -

Border
Gavaskar
Miandad

maybe Gower who flirted with greatness

Otherwise it was an era of brittle line-ups, compared to the great era of batsmanship in the early 2000s for instance

I sort of disagree with the view below.

"Scholars" should not just restrict themselves to analysis and exegesis. But ALSO synthesis!

Spotting commonalities, connecting dots, drawing overarching narratives - that's a part of being an intellectual
Now Ms @elisa_freschi believes it is too simplistic to spot an "overarching" Western civilization from Heredotus to Trump

Or for that matter an overarching "Indic" civilization from Sage Uddalaka to Veer Savarkar

When you put it that way naming individuals, she does make sense
But having said that, there are very very strong commonalities that do bind together decidedly "western" ways of thinking found in Solon's Greece and Trump's America

And commonalities that do unite the Mauryan Vishnu Gupta and Narendra Modi
