Good article in Les Echos ftom this French Doctor who puts her finger on my unease with all this talk of heroism of medical personnel.
lesechos.fr/politique-soci…
"I am not a heroine", she says. "I just do my job. And the nurses are telling me they are not saints...the problem with calling us heroes is that heroes are expected to be superhuman and to sacrifice themselves"
The NHS or any other health system should not be based on the ultimate self-sacrifice, lambs to the slaughter, cheered on from the doorsteps. The Hippocratic Oath is a code of ethics not a death cult. We should expect of our health care professional that they work to the best
of their professional abilities & the duty of society & goverment, far ftom being limited to clapping and "powering them by love" from the safety of their houses, is to provide them with all the means, technology & PPE they deserve rather than
holding them to standards of heroism they should not be held to, putting them under considerable pressure to conform to these standards. Those brave nurses & doctors who died did not choose to die &probably would be the first to say: " I dont want to be a hero or a saint.
I just want to do my job to the best of my abilities and survive." I, for one, am not expecting you to give your life for me, just to do your best within the constraints of human frailty. Thank you all for being such dedicated professionals.
Our best way to help is to put public pressure on the government so that doing your job does not entail putting your life at risk, a risk you should not be expected to take or which should be much much reduced to a very low level.
