In one version, Kahlo and Rivera meet while dancing, singing together and drinking tequila with a group of friends. In a very "oh god this is why I don't drink tequila anymore" move, Kahlo and her friends had a habit of busting out a gun in the middle of the night.....

They were married on August 21st, 1929. Kahlo was 22. Rivera was 42.

Shortly thereafter, the political situation in Mexico began to shift and the pair elected to move to San Francisco. After arriving, it only took a couple months for the pair to take up new lovers.
yes--the pair! they both did! We do not have—or I am not aware of—detailed letters or decisions how they came about to this decision, but Rivera (as was his way) began a very public affair with Helen Willis Moody, a tennis star portrayed in his model for the Allegory of CA (👇🏻)

As Rivera was *so very* in the public eye, "performing" his aggressively male identity , there are a number of pictures of him and Moody, like the first below but only one of Khalo and Hastings (on the right)
Khalo did not like San Francisco. Nor did she like American culture or capitalism. Instead, she spent much of her time painting and doing work that would later make her famous. She also began to work with photography:
