BREAKING: NYC publishes, for first time, data on fatalities that includes "probable" cases (those without a confirmed test result).

It has pushed the death toll in NYC up by 57%.

Was 6,589 before this adjustment. Now stands at 10,367. This is a painful but necessary accounting.
The new data also indicates that since March 13th, there were on average another 248 deaths in NYC not in the count of confirmed or probable covid cases. This means that on average we lost another 100 more NYers over normal. They too, in a sense, are victims of this pandemic.

NYC Health Dept. has made a dramatic change to how it is tracking coronavirus deaths, now includes those who did not have a confirmed test. This graph shows how significant this increase has become.

We had a shot to contain this pandemic early on and we didn’t--in large part because of lack of testing.

Soon, when the # of cases comes down, we're going to get one more shot. We need to go big--really big--to contain this & avoid another apex. Let’s get it right this time. 1/
NYC is still in the heat of this crisis. But it’s not too soon to start preparing for what comes next.

To move towards normalcy, to have even partial reopenings, we need a system to detect *every case*, trace contacts and quarantine when needed--all on a massive scale. 2/
We are currently testing about 10k people a day in NYC. Seems like a lot? We are going to need to ramp up to 10x or 20x this amount for the next phase.

But there’s a problem: we barely have enough supplies for our current relatively low level of testing. 3/

If you live in a large house and have COVID-19, you can isolate from your family by, say, moving into the basement.

But what about the rest of us? How can we protect our family in a small apartment if we are sick?

Here are some answers. 1/
First, why is this necessary?
* Hospitals need to focus on the extremely sick. Fortunately, most of those with mild/moderate covid will be able to heal by resting at home. But we need to take steps to protect those we live with. 2/
Should I wear a mask while sick at home?
* Yes, it is extremely important that the sick individual wear a mask. (Remember a mask does more to protect others than it does to protect the person wearing it.). Secondarily, the rest of the household can wear a mask as well. 3/

I have gotten a lot of pushback for my thread on the challenges facing our city’s system for handling the deceased in the midst of this crisis. One point in particular has generated a lot of controversy. 1/
So a critical clarification: the plan to temporarily inter in a city park or other public property is a *contingency*, one that could be avoided if the # of deaths drops significantly, or if we find a way to secure add’l freezer space. I should have been clearer on that. 2/
Why bring this topic up at all? First because we need help. We need more mortuary staff to come here from other parts of the country. 3/
