I have gotten a lot of pushback for my thread on the challenges facing our city’s system for handling the deceased in the midst of this crisis. One point in particular has generated a lot of controversy. 1/
So a critical clarification: the plan to temporarily inter in a city park or other public property is a *contingency*, one that could be avoided if the # of deaths drops significantly, or if we find a way to secure add’l freezer space. I should have been clearer on that. 2/
Why bring this topic up at all? First because we need help. We need more mortuary staff to come here from other parts of the country. 3/
Secondly, I think we do a disservice to the public by leaving this topic shrouded in mystery. The public should know how we are dealing with this crisis, and that we are prepared for the worst--while we continue to hope and pray the worst won’t come to pass. 4/
If you have lost a loved one already in this pandemic, then you know that our normal system for handling the deceased is under strain. For far too many New Yorkers, there is already no avoiding this discussion. 5/
New Yorkers should understand that we have the best Medical Examiner Office (OCME) in the world, and they have been preparing for this exact scenario for over a decade. So far they have executed on that plan extremely well, despite the extraordinarily difficult circumstances. 6/
Any plan for temporary interment on public property would be carried out by OCME with care, respect, and in an orderly manner. Once this crisis is over NYers would be able to give their loved ones a proper burial. 7/
This pandemic is the most painful thing our city has gone through in generations. This is devastating--for our healthcare system and our system for handling those who have passed. 8/
But the public should have confidence in the professionalism and care with which our city is handling those we have lost to this horrible virus. 9/9
