McDonalds is hosting a 5G conference in China to unveil its latest product.

It's teasing some type of smart product with slim bezels, the latest tech, facial recognition, high quality sound, camera and 5G.

Speculation says it's some new self checkout product.

Your're going to see a lot of reactionary "Animal Crossing banned in China" stories over the next week. So I wrote the thread below to explain the full situation, which still sucks, but is a bit more complicated than what headlines will suggest.
User generated content will always be an issue in China because the government wants to be able to control platforms strictly.

If the govt does not have any control over a platform (or game in this case) and that platform becomes big then it will likely be blocked in some way.
For example. Facebook and Twitch are blocked in China because it is an overseas service that the govt cannot control.

A Chinese version of Minecraft was able to be approved and release because it is controlled by NetEase who can monitor user generated content in game.

Animal Crossing does not have an official release in China, but fans could still buy an imported version of the game from overseas.

Today, listings of the game were removed from Taobao (It's like ebay) and fans can no longer purchase the game from the site.

China strictly regulates the video games market and requires that games and consoles must be approved before being officially distributed in the country.

Recently, Tencent worked with Nintendo Switch to get approval for Switch hardware sales which officially launched Dec 2019.
However, the approval process is long, cumbersome and requires content to be inline with China's gaming regulations.

So far only NSMBU, MK8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey are the only Nintendo games to have been officially approved by China's gaming regulator to launch.

A Chinese Animal Crossing player has set up a store on their Island where other players can buy custom designed in game items from them.

They added their WeChat Pay and AliPay QR codes as a custom design in the game so people can send them real world money for the items. lol
Mobile payments are extremely popular in China. Similar to ApplePay for example. You just scan the QR code of the other persons mobile wallet and you can send them money instantly.

Which is what they have done here.
The dude basically created his own in game economy.
