1. How I sew fabric masks (a thread). Pattern from website below (see comments for pdf printout). #masks4all #MasksForThePeople #maskmaker instructables.com/id/AB-Mask-for… Image
2. Cut fabric. Cut two pieces of woven cotton and one piece of shop towel (or tea towel). Layers work best (hold layered fabric up to light and make sure light doesn't come directly through. Image
3. Layer cotton, shop towel, cotton. Have the right sides out for cotton pattern. I use clothespins to hold the corners. Sew around the outside with a half inch seam. ImageImageImage
4. Add pleats to the sides. I eyeball it and always have the pleats so that the top one is folded down in front. ImageImageImage
5. Fold mask in half hamburger style with the front (side the world will see) on the inside and the back (lining that will be against your face) should be on the outside. Sew the nose tuck and chin tuck using the guided lines on the pattern. ImageImageImageImage
6. Cut all around the outside, about 1/8 of an inch away from the outside seam. ImageImage
7. Cut two pieces of 1 inch wide satin ribbon or bias tape ~42 inches long and two ~3 inch long pieces. The following instructions are for satin, for bias tape, see movie tutorial referenced in tweet below. Fold short pieces over the side of the mask and sew. Then trim to size. ImageImageImageImage
8. Find center of ribbon and match it to center of mask. Fold over and sew on (if bias tape, sew the entire length, for ribbon, just sew edge to mask). Do this on nose (smaller tuck) and chin (larger tuck) side. Tie the ends of the ribbons. ImageImageImageImage
9. Add a nose wire as shown in the video below here (starting around minute 25) for a demo of adding the nose bridge (requires wire, hot glue gun, and non-fraying fabric strip) - see here for how to add bias tape.
10. Now wear your mask safely and proudly. Watch this short video to learn how to properly wear a mask:
