Speaking of 2000, I’ve been thinking a lot about this shrewd insight from @adriennemiller’s recent memoir:
DFW was on a brilliant run as an essayist at the time, and I still remember going to Bulldog News to get Rolling Stone and read the McCain essay that was already generating a great deal of praise.
After a substantial time investment I was shocked to discover that the essay was...not good. Just another Bruni/Fineman style ride in the tire swing in better-turned prose.

On Halloween 2016, I gave a talk with @UnlawfulEntries about how the courts and Congress would not meaningfully constrain President Trump because they would both be controlled by Republicans. I assumed that this would be purely hypothetical. I was prescient about the wrong thing:

One advantage Trump has in this media environment is that because he has absolutely no standards or principles he avoids the endless hair-splitting "hypocrisy" attacks the media always considers fair game no matter how trivial or arbitrary
The actual content of the story shows Warren forgoing resources she desperately needs to live up to her stated commitments, but the headline and lede frames it as hypocritical flip-flopping because there are inevitable edge cases. vox.com/recode/2020/2/…
