Can we please cut this shit out. "I also don't like certain things about how the DHS operates, so when RFK SHAKES THINGS UP maybe he will do it in a sensible manner I approve of" is the kind of delusional thinking that leads you to President Donald J. Trump in the first place Image Link (definitely not wasting a gift link on this one) nytimes.com/2024/11/15/opi…

"America is no longer fighting in a ground war. So why does it feel like it is?"
Image "When Biden said he would end the war in Afghanistan, he actually meant that he would end all military conflict in the world forever" isn't even goalpost moving, it's like saying the Florida Panthers promised to win the Stanley Cup but are losers because the Marlins are 43-73

Trying to retcon Trump as a whistleblower is amazing stuff even for Glenn "James Comey was in the tank for Hillary Clinton" ROFL. Glenn really should reconsider the "tweeting about dogs in Portuguese" approach to days when something bad happens for his political side Image

As Patrick Deneen is making the rounds with a new book generating credulous coverage for claims that "post-liberal" reactionaries are actually more egalitarian than liberals, keep this in mind: The Biden administration is enacting exactly the kind of pro-labor, pro-domestic manufacturing, pro-environmental industrial policy Deneen and his allies claim to want, and they don't care at all: lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2023/06/the-re…

It’s worth noting that the only reason Trump is the first former president to be indicted is that Gerald Ford unwisely preempted them lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2023/06/its-th… Ford's pardon was very unpopular -- indeed, it probably cost him re-election -- and should not be seen as establishing some kind of American constitutional tradition that former presidents should be above the law.

Great achievements in Alabama neoconfederacy lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2023/06/great-… Plainly, Alabama should never have panicked and brought in Vladimir Myshkin to start the second period

They also don’t want you to know that book critics write more about Toni Morrison and Phillip Roth than Robert Ludlum, which is very odd given that the latter sold many more copies It’s fine not to be interested in watching Succession, just say that rather than pretending to believe that there’s a prefect correlation between aesthetic quality/interest and popularity

Sean makes the smartest case for the "NHL playoffs are pretty much a random walk and we just have to accept it" theory, and as always this is worth reading, but I don't fully agree. Ultimately, the Stanley Cup is almost always won by a genuinely top-quality team And I think if they win Florida (who had the best regular season record in the league last year and added a Hart finalist, albeit at substantial cost) qualifies, just as I think Boston was a very good team having a season where everything broke right rather than historically good

I love substantive, well-argued hatchet jobs - I mean this in a non-pejorative sense — and this is as great as everyone says. “Sackler Senior Curator, Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art” this is the best work DeLillo has done in years Image

I completely missed the boat on that series, not I think because I overestimated the Oilers (who are pretty clearly established as a top-tier contender) but because I underestimated the Knights, who really are a tremendous organization

You should definitely read @jbouie on the Court's illegitimacy in its entirety, but the last graf here is critical to understanding why the contemporary Court is *uniquely* illegitimate: nytimes.com/2023/05/12/opi… Image The Supreme Court, for better or worse, has indeed generally been aligned with a dominant electoral coalition. This Court supermajority is aligned with the faction that has lost the popular vote in 7 of the last 8 elections: lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2023/05/the-su…

The thing about Byron White -- seen here speaking for the proposition that even if Roe is good law spousal veto provisions are constitutional -- is that he was an asshole Image In the case of a disagreement between partners about whether to bring a pregnancy to term the decision has to be made unilaterally either way, and which person should be able to make it is one of the easiest "dilemmas" to resolve in the history of law and morality

The larger issue here is that the instigator rule is applied way too arbitrarily and infrequently to be subject to an automatic suspension. Most of the time what Nurse did isn’t even a extra two I feel strongly that the NHL needs to have harsher punishments for violent garbage time/postgame infractions where ordinary penalties have no deterrent effect, but this relatively innocuous play is a very weird thing to single out

So the justification for hosting a Nuremberg rally in prime time with the network's imprimatur is "white Trump supporters in New Hampshire still like Donald Trump, and this is newsworthy?" This. I would also say there's a lesson in the coverage election that ended Roe v. Wade being dominated by a minor and stupefyingly dull story about email server management but we all know that's never going to be learned

The sweaty desperation of the Supreme Court’s apologists lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2023/05/the-sw… The brutal truth is that he fact that the Supreme Court keeps taking away long-established rights with reasoning of roughly this caliber is doing far more damage to the Court's legitimacy than even the superb reporting of ProPublica can accomplish Image

Bush v. Gore: still lawless after all these years lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2023/05/the-gr… The reason the Florida Supreme Court didn't apply a uniform statewide standard is that THE US SUPREME COURT TOLD IT NOT TO. Waving off a goal based on this chickenshit would be embarrassing even by the standards of NHL replay review Player accidentally and immaterially touches the puck 10 seconds before the goal, and we have a goal nullified in an elimination game. What an incredibly stupid system -- @DownGoesBrown's metaphor of a "get out of jail free" card is particularly apt here theathletic.com/4439937/2023/0…
