Some social media news:

Facebook will show alerts to people who have previously interacted with misinformation about coronavirus

Anyone who has liked, reacted or commented on "harmful misinformation about COVID-19" will get this message in their News Feed over the next weeks
Facebook have made this change after a campaign by @Avaaz - but as you'll see, it hasn't gone all the way and directly challenged anyone about misinformation

It's interesting to compare Avaaz's proposal. Much stronger. Would it be more effective or would it enrage people?
Avaaz would also send a notification to anyone who'd seen misinformation - not just interacted with, but *seen*

If you think your notifications are busy right now...
There's no doubt coronavirus misinformation is still going viral, esp in languages other than English - but never been clear corrections would stop that

Avaaz commissioned a study to look into this. The results are quite striking

On 24 March, Matt Hancock told the briefing that “our new testing facility in Milton Keynes opens today and we are therefore on the ramp up of the testing numbers”

Over two weeks later, it's still only conducting 1500 tests a day

To build them, the government requisitioned testing machines from labs across the country

But big factories are slow to get going - and tests are still being done manually

I understand there are two reasons why testing is still being done manually

1. The centre is still building a digital platform to manage the testing process end-to-end
2. A shortage of parts

Okay, so the PM is sending a letter. A physical one, which will arrive next week. But the official UK government Facebook account... which can be used to send messages instantly... has still only run one ad about coronavirus

I just don't get it. What am I missing?
Before someone jumps up to tell me that leaflets are more effective than social media ads - you can do both!
I may well be missing something, but it does seem that there are lots of comms levers the govt still isn't pulling

Look at the Tory website next to the SNP's. One has a redirect, the other's been converted into a coronavirus info site. Same story with emails to party members

Despite being offered millions in free ad credits by Facebook

The government has run six ads from the official NHS account

But they were last updated on 19 March - and given the clear signs of public confusion, the focus on people with symptoms (rather than social distancing or shielding) already looks out of date

Mark Zuckerberg said earlier this month that he'd give the WHO "as many free ads as they need" - and promised "millions more in ad credits to other organisations" helping fight coronavirus
