The @ubnt fairy came and I couldn’t be more excited! 😝
So here we go with the build! First up was the rack, I wanted one with wheels because of where it’s going (space restricted and can’t go on the wall). Couldn’t see one I like with wheels so I gave mine wheels!
Next was unboxing and damn Ubiquiti know how to package stuff. It’s like opening Apple products but better. I mean just look at how they package *screws*!!
I have loads of space in the rack so gave everything room to breathe. Power down at the bottom so other devices like the modem can sit behind and then the UDM Pro and switch above that.
HDD installation was a breeze, just pop the door, clip in the drive and slide the tray back in.
Before I closed up the sides I installed the lights and fans too. Maybe an odd decision on the fans at the top but they’re intake fans in my setup. Normally you’d exhaust at the top because that’s where the heat is but there’s method in the madness.
I bought filtered fans so they’re pulling in clean air and filling the rack with that and then exhausting out of the various vents around the sides and base. My current setup doesn’t have fans and there are no temperature issues so I’m not expecting problems.
Now, the part I’ve been avoiding and why I’m doing this. My current... setup? I’m not sure I can call it a setup, more like a cupboard with crap shoved in it... Here we go! 🙈🙈🙈
You can see the space restrictions I’m working with but yes, my current rack is a ... cardboard box... 🤦‍♂️
I’m also dealing with existing wiring in the house for all the patch points too which come into a small switch here.
They didn’t have cable clips apparently so cables were tied up with screws 😭
But the build was almost ready for installation, just wiring up the lights and fans to the PSU in my server which was also moving in above the rack and out of my office.
I did get an SFP+ DAC cable to hook the UDM Pro up to the Switch 24 too. Frees up ports and gives me another cool cable! 😉
The connector on top is an SFP+ to RJ45 for my backup internet connection which is delivered via gigabit ethernet so the port needed adapting.
Here’s the first test fit of the cabinet in place! 💪
Getting items booted up and I had a problem connecting my PPPoE connection but that was my fault 😇
The little screens on the devices are awesome and give you info at a glance. You can scroll through a bunch of info screens.
Ok, let’s boot this sucker up proper and turn on the server which is powering the fans and lights!
And without the lights 😎
Blinky LEDs!!!11!1!1
I have the PPPoE modem and Raspberry Pi in the cabinet but things like the Philips Hue and Samsung SmartThings controllers on the outside for better signal.
You can also see my GigaCube and 4G antenna on top of the cabinet for hopefully obvious reasons!
Here’s a better shot of the fans and you can see they’re setup as intake as they are filtered units as mentioned before.
Pretty much finished on the hardware setup now 😎
Holy crap that was easy! I just got a @letsencrypt cert installed on the UDM Pro in like, 4 minutes? Not bad from start to finish considering I didn't know what I was doing 🤣
