2. Years ago, the mob controlled who did and didn't get a liquor license in New Jersey. Eventually, the state locked it down and nobody could get new licenses.
Essentially, you had to wait for grandfathered licenses to go out of business and some corrupt pol would sell it.

3. That's the sad truth about how liquor licenses work in New Jersey, and @GovMurphy damn well knows it.
He doesn't even have much say. Corruption does. And he's told to shut his mouth and not even to dare to mess with that racket or he'll be sorry.

4. But for @GovMurphy to claim some fake addiction expert he made up told him it would lead to "unintended mental health problems" if he closed liquor stores, is probably one of the most cowardly coverups of corruption I've ever heard.
And one of the most irresponsible.

5. Granted, there would be problems for an addict if they couldn't get a bottle. As in, they'll have to stop drinking.
But addiction experts aim for recovery and tend to follow the steps, which means closures would remove the need to remove yourself from people, places & things.
