There's been a lot of misinformation and downplaying of the severity of Covid-19, namely: "it's just the flu!" So I pulled up the data from the CDC and plotted it. Below is an image of data from the past 7 flu seasons I plotted with total flu fatalities and pneumonia fatalities. 
The two curves closely follow each other, except for the current year. Pneumonia can be caused by SARS-CoV-2, and the spike seen in pneumonia this year is mostly Covid-19.
Many will contend that this is similar to the 2018 flu season.
About that: the 2017-2018 flu season was the deadliest in the U.S. in 40 years. SARS-CoV-2 has already peaked above that, even with physical distancing measures in place.

By every objective metric, SARS-CoV-2 is a more transmissible and deadly pathogen than the seasonal flu.
