R class 4-6-4 the mighty ' Hudson ' !
Designed as a fast passenger locomotive to replace the A2. Displaced after a couple of years by the diesels (B & S).
The R is probably the best known of all the VR steam locos, they have done and still do a lot of tours.

For a while WestCoast railway ran regular steam revenue services to Warrnambool using R711 and R761 1998-2004. Technically the last steam hauled revenue services.
Photograph I took at Colac Nov1999 during a water stop.
At Warrnambool.
R711 had been fitted with controls that would allow diesel electric locomotives to be operated from the steam engine, so that one crew can operate the steam loco and diesel loco with heavy trains during busy periods.

Lest We Forget ..
As many as 247 trains ran per week in 1944.
Incredible for an aging fleet of steam loco second hand from WA and Qld, SA. They soldiered on!
