Hans Smidth painted this Danish peasant home in 1912. A simple timber frame with brick infill and a rubble stone extension. Not a complicated build by any means. The straw roof is either bound or sown (moderns cheat a little with a screwdriver and galvanized steel wire).
The (legendary) architect Søren Vadstrup created this color map of Danish peasant homes based on research from the 1940s. All paints are pigmented lime for the infills, and usually tar or linseed oil based paints for the timber frames. No noxious chemicals necessary.
These simple buildings are fantastic whether fancy or rustic, off grid or with all modern fittings inside, in the city as well as in the forest or among the fields, humble or distinguished.
