Good Morning #miltwitter,
@danielmkim has given me permission to hijack #CookingForLieutenants and teach you how to make Sausage Gravy for Biscuits and Gravy
One of the best thing about being in the Military is being able to sample food outside what you grew up with. As a white boy from Western Colorado, we didn't do biscuits and gravy. I learned how to make proper gravy while Mess Cranking in the Wardroom #CookingForLieutenants
Onboard my first ship USS The Sullivans DDG-68. While cranking (KP for you Army types) I worked for CS2 Steen who was from a little town in Georgia that I can't remember. He showed me the way and the truth! #CookingForLieutenants
You will need the following!
Olive Oil
1 small onion
Minced Garlic
1 lb Breakfast Sausage
1/3 cup of flour
3 cups of Milk
Tony Chacheres Seasoning Salt
Pepper
#CookingForLieutenants
Put the pan on the stove on medium heat. While the pan is warming finely dice your onion. Pour 1 tbsp of olive oil in the pan and add the minced garlic. Let the garlic sit in the olive oil for about 1 minute then add your diced onion
#CookingForLieutenants.
Cook onion in the garlic and olive oil until it starts to turn brown. I use a splash of water to delaze the pan (or white wine). Next you add the Sausage to the pan and cook until fully browned. Make sure to break up the sausage clumps #CookingForLieutenants
After the sausage is completely browned, it's time to throw in the flour. Mix the flour into the sausage until you cannot see it anymore. #CookingForLieutenants
Once you cannot see anymore of the flour, you add in 3 cups of milk. #CookingForLieutenants
Now it's time to use the single greatest seasoning salt in the planet. Tony Chacheres is a staple in a real Southern kitchen and makes this kick ass. Season the milk/sausage mixture to taste with Tony's and black pepper. #CookingForLieutenants
As the milk heats up, whisk the mixture. This makes sure nothing sticks to the pan and burns. As the gravy thickens you can add more milk until you end up with the consistency you want. #CookingForLieutenants
When you achieve the consistency you want, you are done!
Serve over biscuits fresh from the oven on its own or with you favorite type of egg. My family like to make what we call Southern Benedict with it and put scrambled eggs on top #CookingForLieutenants
Thank you @danielmkim for allowing me to hijack this hashtag. I may not be a professional, but cooking for my family is one of my favorite hobbies!
