This is going to be a cryptic comment and I apologize in advance for that, but I feel it is worth saying anyhow:

The number of lives saved by specific message boards this year is much higher than most people’s guess at that number.
(Probably also WhatsApp groups or whatever else the cool kids are using these days.)
Some mechanisms:

* built high-trust networks between people who would otherwise never have met or interacted
* some communities were either you could uncharitably say LARPing or charitably say “running an iterative distributes tabletop exercise” repeatedly for years
I don’t know why organizations which have a binder labeled “Global Pandemic Response Plan” seem so catastrophically ineffective right now.
But I feel reasonably confident that some folks far closer to “Oh Scenario 6? Can do we 6c? It’s a fun one.” seem to have understood earlier what game 2020 was playing.

And at least a few of them were in the right place or could DM someone who was.
