As a leader, saying things people don’t want to hear is tough, but this is such a good formula. 👇

Also, I love this from Jacinda Adern: “Please be strong, be kind, and unite against Covid-19.” (Note, if you will, the use of “please”.)
It reminded me of this piece by Tim Harford.

Good leadership can get us past normalcy bias and misplaced optimism. But it all goes wrong when *leadership* displays normalcy bias. “Keep calm and carry on” is no good for rapid change.

If there’s a binary here, it’s familiar from the workplace: empowering people to deal with uncertainty vs patrician leadership that operates on a need to know basis.

Given massively high UK govt approval ratings, clearly the latter is *psychologically* effective for many people.
Whether or not it’s better at saving lives now, and creating the unity needed to rebuild a country in the near future, might be another matter altogether.
The terms used here (“compassion” and “justice”) might seem to undermine those points at first glance, but not at all: justice seeks difficulty. And I’d go as far as to argue that “compassion” is the wrong word here.

(This is a great piece btw.)
