#Book Thread - Corporate Rebels
Chipper Bro, one of Patagonia’s first employees. Patagonia is an American retail company founded in 1973 by fanatical mountaineer Yvon Chouinard.
The title of Yvon Chouinard’s autobiography speaks volumes: Let My People Go Surfing: The Education of a Reluctant Businessman.
Research at University of Leiden concludes that 25 percent of employees doubt the usefulness of their work. In book Bullshit Jobs, anthropologist David Graeber quotes a British study that 37 percent of workers feel that their job does not make a useful contribution to society.
Why do we accept that work is just about making money? Why do we agree to work for a boss whose only goal is to get richer, and for shareholders who don’t look beyond the next quarter?
This is not good for the world and is demotivating. A recent paper in The Journal of Business Ethics 9 , backed-up by five studies, showed employee motivation is 17 to 33 percent higher when profit is not the primary concern.
Dan Pink Said "Being aware of your contribution is extremely motivating. The paradox is that many organisations do nothing when it comes to creating a higher purpose."
Patagonia mission statement, hangs above Chipper’s desk. “Build the best products, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis,”
Progressives start revolutions, they don’t just make money. They crusade.
Profit is important, of course. It funds the pursuit of purpose, but should be the means, not the end. Profit for a company is like oxygen for a human: necessary to stay alive, but not the reason for living.
Dan Pink Said "Being aware of your contribution is extremely motivating. The paradox is that many organisations do nothing when it comes to creating a higher purpose."
Trust comes first; it ensures that unnecessary rules can be safely abolished. There is no need to ask permission for leave, or to verify working hours.
The most powerful examples provide answers to questions such as: Why does our company exist? Why do we do what we do? What is our added value? Who are we? Do we mean what we say? Who are we doing this for? What difference do we want to make?
