How many times did X outcome happen this year?

How many times did we take Y action which is upstream of X outcome?

Are we happy with that number? If not, should we prioritize that action higher?

This turns out to be a surprisingly powerful way to think about time allocation.
Thought I had added a motivating example. D'oh.

This is very well understood for pipelines specifically, but there are a lot of things which are not commonly understood as pipelines but have similar dynamics.
e.g. If you are a consultant and you want more gigs, gigs are downstream of proposals, proposals are downstream of engaged conversations, and engaged conversations are downstream of speculative chats.

Are you happy with the number of proposals, conversations, speculative chats?
What's something that isn't obviously a pipeline, hmm...

For me, published essays are downstream of ideas explored, and that is a function of reading, working in new areas, or writing explorative memos or musing on Twitter.

Too few essays today ~= too little input weeks ago.
