EV's are already THREE times better!

Today @transenv came out with the best study in the world right now on the CO2 emissions of electric vehicles versus diesel or petrol. They also provide a handy tool that allows you to compare country and technology. (short thread)

I mailed the lead author my compliments yesterday (after I got pre-release info from @volkskrant) and was heartened to hear (and see in the supplement) that my publication about this (sciencedirect.com/science/articl…) was put to good use. Their time investment took it to the next level!

What I really like is that this is finally a study that includes development of the electricity mix over the years the EV is driven. Most studies simply assume they will always drive on the mix that's prevalent in the year they where sold which is just sloppy.

What I also like is that they use up to date numbers on battery production.

They left out nothing and where extremely complete. But that doesn't harm the EV: it's even better in coal heavy Poland by now. And in renewable Sweden it's really no contest.

What I like best is that they are very very transparent. I always look at the annex with underlying assumptions and here I think it is well written, short but exhaustive and accurate. transportenvironment.org/sites/te/files…

I hope @transenv keeps it up so I can move on to do different things. (Just like @CarbonBrief now updates my pinned tweet on solar PV and the IEA ;-)
The coming months I will focus on electric 40t trucks and the disruptive impact of EV on IPCC scenarios. Maybe podcasts and vlogs.
