We're a NO on the latest package (aka COVID 3.5) to pass the Senate. It's nothing close to the kind of response families and workers need right now. And we're calling on House Democrats to oppose this package and fight harder to #putpeoplefirst. /THREAD
Here's what we see when we review this bill:
✖️No $ to secure elections
✖️No protections or support for frontline workers
✖️No support for immigrants
✖️No additional economic support for workers & families
✖️No $ for USPS
✖️Nothing to make sure companies maintain payroll
Of COURSE we want to support small businesses to make sure they can weather this disaster and keep their workers paid. But the small biz loan program is sending millions to Ruth's Chris while leaving nothing for real small businesses around the country. washingtonpost.com/business/2020/…
And if we fail to provide support for families -- and for local governments who will soon begin furloughing workers -- there won't be anyone to shop at small businesses.
Not to mention that the policies we're fighting for -- that constituents are calling for -- are massively popular. filesforprogress.org/memos/put_peop…
They support universal, monthly cash-payments that continue for the duration of the crisis by a 67-percentage-point margin. They support all people being provided with full health coverage for all coronavirus care and protections for frontline workers by 58 percentage points.
But just as important as its *many* policy shortcomings, this bill gives away all Dem leverage for a better package. It undercuts their position for the next round, which McConnell is already trying to get out of (b/c he's gotten everything he wants).
We fought so hard to win back the House in 2018 to make sure that we had a voice in negotiations like this. So far, we've heard silence from the House when we should be hearing a rallying cry for real relief for people.
.@senatemajldr and the Senate has had its say. It's a bad deal for Americans but a great deal for political donors. The people's House should now use its power to make it better rather than rubber-stamping Trump and McConnell's failed agenda. We *need* to see better.
And if you're reading this, we need you to call your member of Congress, send them an email, record a video, tag them on Twitter and comment on their Facebook page. We can't rally right now, but we can make our voices heard. And we need to do it now. peopleoverprofits.indivisible.org
Folks, if you want @HouseDemocrats to fight harder, reply here with your Representative’s twitter handle and tell them you’re paying attention.
