Thinking about the impacts of the current crisis on different aspects of the UK economy and concerned that smaller businesses are already and will continue to be the biggest losers. Many of which will also face larger relative Brexit adjustment costs... 1/
One shift in UK spending in the last few weeks will have been from bars and restaurants to Netflix and Amazon. Another from smaller shops to larger supemarkets. A few will be doing very well, a lot struggling. And restrictions leading to this could last many months 2/
Then the cost for many manufacturers and services companies of implementing social distancing in their work or being unable to travel - arguably I'd suggest likely to hit smaller companies worse though that won't be universal 3/
One area of particular concern for the relaxation of lockdown will be the duty of care - how to show you are not risking the health of staff or customers? Those who argue for deregulation but praise common law tend to ignore this point... 4/
Brexit is also likely to impose disproportionate cost on smaller companies, particularly through new export paperwork for exporters, but potentially also staff costs (where a massively reduced supply should normally push costs up) among others... 5/
Government is intervening to help business through the current crisis, welcome even with inevitable concerns on operations, exclusions etc. But there's a need for longer term thinking about the UK economy and smaller business. See also this interesting Nov article. 6/6 /end
