America is divided in large part between people who want their president to be much more knowledgeable than they are and those who want someone who won't make them feel stupid and who "speaks like they speak." The latter endanger us all in the name of preserving their self-esteem
If u want a president you could enjoy getting a beer with, or who's a "regular person," why not your cousin Cooter or Aunt Mabel? I'll tell you why...cuz they don't shit about the things a president needs to know. The idea that the wisdom of common folks is all we need is toxic
Yes, some of the smartest people I ever met (in terms of true wisdom) were regular people, often w/o college educations. But ya know what? They were smart enough to know what they didn't know and to believe in the value of listening to those who DO know things they don't...
The fact that there is wisdom in everyday people is true. The fact that it's ignorant to trust everyday people to hold forth on matters of science is also true...rejecting this truism isn't about "defending regular folks" it's about protecting the self esteem of fragile people.
